Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know if my school is accredited?

A: As with an in-person chapter, students may only be eligible if their college or university is accredited by one of the below regional accrediting agencies, as accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

  • Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) Western Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
  • WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)

Q: Can I send a screen shot for my transcript?

A: KON requires a transcript from the university. It does not need to be sent directly from an administrative office and does not need to be notarized. However, it must be an official copy. Screenshots or copy-paste of school student records such as from logging into the university’s student portal are not accepted.

The transcript should include: name of student, name of university, cumulative GPA, status as undergraduate or graduate student / degree sought, declared major. Most schools include this information automatically. If your transcript does not include this information do not attempt to add it – we will provide further instructions.

Q: Do you round GPA scores?

A: Yes. KON requires a 3.3 GPA for membership eligibility. If we receive a 3.29 then yes we will approve that as a 3.3.

Q: Can you rush my membership?

A: The focus of joining a KON chapter is not just honoring scholarship, but helping students build leadership and supporting them in research and community service activities.

The intent of this chapter is not to join right before graduation. We recommend that all students join as early as they can in their student track to take advantage of these opportunities. No, we will not rush your membership.

Q: I joined. Why haven’t I heard from you?

A: Currently our virtual chapter promises membership, and aims to have at least two meetings a term. At this time there is no promise of a formal initiation ceremony.

KON and our virtual chapter are small operations. (Think of a club meeting, not a corporate conglomerate). Just like our chapters located in schools, we have an adviser who is balancing other responsibilities while supporting the chapter and will do their best to coordinate meetings. If you join the virtual chapter and want to hold a leadership meeting, volunteer, or help host meetings – please email your chapter adviser.

Q: What are the requirements of members for time and money?

A: Currently there are no requirements for time or money beyond the initial initiation fee which is the same cost as all initiates.

However, those members that actively participate will not only get a more fulfilling experience and help build something important, but they’ll also get their cords free. Those students that are not regular attendees or active members may join and not participate – but if they want cords they must buy them themselves.

Q: What if I join the virtual chapter and then a chapter colonizes at my school?

A: You will forever be listed as being initiated in the virtual chapter because you were. From the date of colonization any interested students will be required to join their local chapter (usually when they jump from the virtual to the local is either immediately or at the end of the term and is often the choice of the student).
