Kappa Omicron Nu Undergraduate Research Award

This research award is currently under re-development - January 2020

Grants will be awarded to eligible Kappa Omicron Nu members for the purpose of recognizing and rewarding students for excellence in undergraduate research. In particular, the award is designed to recognize students who demonstrate both skill and creativity in conducting research and writing the research report. Class papers, independent research papers, and creative projects are eligible for the award. Papers may represent either original research or research based upon secondary sources. We welcome applications from a range of disciplines in the human sciences and using a variety of methodologies (including action research), as long as the research focuses on a significant issue in the human sciences.

Successful papers will

  • address a significant topic in the human sciences
  • make a clear argument that is well supported throughout the paper
  • demonstrate skill in analyzing data
  • use data effectively and integrate it smoothly into the paper
  • communicate findings clearly
  • be well-written and engaging

Successful creative projects will

  • include a written summary of the project and an appropriate artistic representation of the work, such as
  • a performance video
  • a compact disc or video
  • photographs or copies of work

Each winner of this award will receive a $300 award, and the faculty mentor will receive a $300 award.


  • Submit an electronic copy (WORD or PDF) of the research paper to:
  • Provide a 2-3 page summary with the following content
    • Name of applicant
    • Title of paper
    • Context/purpose of the research (e.g., class paper, independent research, collaboration with principal researcher)
    • Student status (expected graduation date; department/program)
    • Description of applicant's interest in the research topic and why the applicant feels he/she deserves the award (up to 100 words)
    • Ask faculty mentor to submit Mentor Recommendation form to
