Member Spotlight - January 2013
Lanae Ball, M.S., is a doctoral student in the Department of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She earned a B.A. in Political Science from Wheaton College in Norton, MA in 2004 and an M.S. in Nutrition from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC in 2011. She joined the Meredith College Chapter of Kappa Omicron Nu in 2011. Lanae also works as a Public Health Consultant for the WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition Program in the State of North Carolina and is passionate about connecting low-income groups with fresh, local produce.
Her current study "To what extent changes in lifestyle and food environment affects food insecurity among recently arrived refugees in the U.S.: A study using the longitudinal assessment method" is funded by the Kappa Omicron Nu Research Fellowship. Lanae presented preliminary data from this study, including interviews and in-depth case studies with five refugee families, at the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior annual conference in July 2012. Her doctoral dissertation will focus on understanding the effectiveness of food assistance programs on improving the food security among low-income population groups.
